Helper Apps: Part 1, by the Reviews TeamPreface. At different basic classes I’m asked why we don’t review some small programs. And the answer is: this month and next I’ve asked readers to review ten pieces of software, most of which are shareware (try before you buy). I’ve called them “Helper Apps” since they are not major programs but designed to perform focused tasks or projects. For instance, to help perform your computer’s regular maintenance, try System Mechanic Pro or out of sheer interest, tract the actual route from one web page or e-mail source to another (you’ll find that A to B is never a straight line). Or, read about a straight forward program to make multimedia slide shows or convert your old cassettes/LPs to a digital file to burn onto a CD or how to find spyware on your computer. I hope you will find one or more of interest – if you do, drop an e-mail note to the reviewer. And as usual, always go to the vendor’s web site for updates and current news. Enjoy. Charles W.
